Bacon Sundae

The TV displays the commercials from Denny's Baconalia every now & then, and okay, their PR people hooked me in. I bit. Literally. I went there and tried their bacon sundae: vanilla ice cream topped with maple syrup & crispy bacon. (The bacon being crisp is key IMO.) I should mention that I really am not a fan of the sweet & salty combo like a lot of people are. I absolutely detest the McGriddles at McDonald's. Once I got into a heated argument at a diner that all started because I asked for my pancakes on a separate plate so the syrup doesn't run into my eggs and other saltiness, but they put it all on the same plate anyway. You get my point; I am not into this combo. Folks, I liked this sundae. It really was good. In fact, I would love to have one now since today was a bit of a scorcher. My waitress said she was "scared to try it," but if I worked there, I'd probably start each day with one. So good!

I do have to mention, however, that if you do try it that you avoid the one at 7405 Greenbelt Road, Greenbelt - (301) 474-6423. Greenbelt is nice town outside of Washington, DC. I mean fricken NASA is just up the street. But something transforms inside that Denny's that makes people lose all manner of, well, manners. You'd swear you were in the hood. Lazy ass workers, screaming babies, couple next to me both were watching videos on their smart phones L-O-U-D-L-Y, huge roach crawling on the floor that a customer disposed of since the waitstaff said they were freaked out (male AND female), and so on. I know it's just a Denny's, and I've been drunk there, seen fights, and have had silly experiences there, but WTF!?!? I was there when it was daylight and senior citizens were eating. Revolting. Damnit I wished someone from corporate walked in to check on their store.

Either way, it didn't deter me too much from enjoying my bacon sundae. And you should, too.

USA USA USA!

The Hairy Mexican (Roll)

I know. I was just as shocked as you are right now, for the vulgar,
yet slightly humorous and innovative sushi roll you see before you.
How one comes up with these names is beyond me. But you can't say you
don't get it at all.

Only in America I say.

Pasta Revelation

I've cooked pasta many a time and it's always simple - season the water, cook the pasta al dente, finish the pasta in the sauce, and top with good extra virgin olive oil. This always yields a great result, but I decided to use sea salt instead of kosher salt to season the water and what a wtf revelation.

The boiling water should always taste like the sea, but when using sea salt the flavor of the pasta just pops - I used a large handful of sea salt. You'll notice the difference right away when tasting the pasta out of the water. Usually, the pasta doesn't have much flavor on it's own, but with the sea salt - it's friggin' delicious right out of the boiling water. If it doesn't taste really delicious, you need to add a lot more salt!

I ended up tossing the pasta simply with some shallots, garlic, cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, and topped with extra virgin oil - it was so friggin' good I had to have four bowls worth. The flavor of the pasta is so delicious that you don't need to do much to it. I'll definitely be rocking the sea salt in the water going forward. Buono appetito!

Ren’s Ramen review

Ren’s Ramen

Ca$h only!

Last week, just after Memorial Day weekend of 2011, I was telling the tale of my Memorial Day weekend 2009 full of good eats in NYC a couple years ago to my coworker, and we got to the ramen topic because of my incredible experience at Ippudo. He told me there was a good one in Bethesda, MD, and immediately I exclaimed “let’s go!” but he continued, they closed last year. Fast forward several days later, and he said his friend went to one. Apparently the same place reopened in Wheaton, and it opened up a day earlier! I was too excited that I broke my own rule of not going to a restaurant within the first 2 weeks. A couple weeks ago, I went to the new Shake Shack within a week of its opening, and it went pretty much perfect, so what the heck? I should have listened to my instincts.

Saturday night, 8PM, and there’s a line out the door. 1.) It seemed popular, since you can hear people talking about this location and how they’ve been to the previous one in the past and 2.) the place is just tiny. There’s a ledge that can sit about 6 that’s like a bar and about 7 tables where most of them only sat 2 people. I waited about 30 minutes before I was able to get a seat. The crowd was mostly Japanese, which is a really, really good sign. The staff was Japanese as well, except for a waitress and a busboy (who were Latino). Since I practically memorized their small menu during my wait, I knew exactly what I wanted. My table had 2 bowls "The Sapporo" style Ramen: one Tonshio, and the other Miso. Both bowls were topped with roast pork, seasoned boiled egg, and corn. The description is: “pork based broth, 1piece roast pork, bean sprout, bamboo shoot, scallion, onion, ground pork.” The stewed fatty pork is the topping I really wanted, and I was notified that they didn’t have any more. I was disappointed, sooooo disappointed. Had I not just waited for a half hour, I would have walked out. I still considered walking out, actually. I just got a cheap “Oh, so very sorry.” Obviously I stayed. Seriously, first weekend, and you run out of what would probably be the most ordered in a small joint like this? Whatever, I got the roast pork. The wait for the food was so long. I won’t hold that against them, since I am guessing it’s to make the food better than if they simply scooped it up. The food & drinks are delivered to all the tables there individually i.e. no trays. 2 hands hold 2 cups of water. Both hands hold one bowl. A table of 2 requires 3 trips. Finally, after the wait, the disappointment, the wait again, it’s eat time! Wait a tick… where are my eggs? There is no seasoned boiled egg here. Ah man. Another mistake? I call the waitress, she apologizes, and returns after another wait with an egg cut in half in a small bowl. There is one more mistake, however this was to my advantage; they added corn. Finally, the taste. I go right for the broth. It’s porky. It’s flavorful. It’s good! Did it make me forget about everything else? Nope. But I was happy to finally
dig in and enjoy this. The roast pork was much better than my expectation. If the roast pork is this good, I could only imagine the fatty pork would be even better. I had to search & search for the ground pork, and when I finally found it, it was clumped together – all ½ a teaspoon’s worth. Why even mention it on the menu? I’m not looking for an overload, but both bowls’ worth combined didn’t seem enough, especially since the bowls were so large. As far as the ramen noodles go, since I’m not an expert, I can only say it is much better than the ones in the package. I was thinking the ones at Ippudo were better, but I would have to do a side-by-side. I could really appreciate that Ippudo makes them on site, but I later heard, but not confirmed, that the ramen here are imported from Hokkaido, Japan at the last location, so I’m wondering if these are from Sapporo. The texture seemed to be the right al dente. I noticed older Japanese people trying it and nodding to each other in approval. The egg definitely added nice texture to the soup, especially with the gooey yolk. Both bowls were quite salty to the point where one of the tongues was burned at the tip and bright red so I finished off the other bowl since I didn’t mind at all. $31.55 for the 2 bowls. They start off at $10 or $11, and then everything is à la carte. They didn’t charge me for the corn they accidentally added to the bowl, so that was good. As highlighted above, this place is ca$h only. Would I go back? Most definitely. Obviously I would wait for them to iron out their kinks.

Doritos - Spicy Sweet Chili Flavor

Are you kidding me?
I never thought anything would surpass Ranch flavored Doritos.
That was until I tore into a bag of Spicy Sweet Chili today.

Phenomenal use of flavors, texture, and marketing Frito Lays.
Well Done.  WELL DONE!!!

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana - Revisit

Wrapping up our Connecticut weekend, we revisited Frank Pepe's - my favorite non Sicilian pizza out of Italy. No idea why, but the thrill was definitely gone - still a great pie, but no more wtf for me.

Our Menu

White Clam Pizza *
Still really fun to eat, but I definitely lost that WTF feeling for this pie. Maybe, clams weren't as fresh tasting or the dough was not as crisp and flavorful.

The Original Tomato Pie with Shrimp **
My boy, FP, ordered the shrimp pie and this was so great. Still not a huge fan of the normal tomato pie since the sauce is a tad too sweet for me, but the shrimps were stuuupid good. So, tender, sweet, and garlicky. It was so unbelievable I need to cook me up some shrimps soon.

Watermelon and Lemon Italian Ice **
After a fun pizza, my favorite childhood thing to get was an italian ice in those ridiculous paper cups that always ends up leaking through the cup. We stopped by Libby's Italian Pastry shop next door to Pepe's (139 Wooster St) to get some. This was pure nostalgia - not too sweet, still refreshing and amped up watermelon flavor (probably chemically so).

As I've mentioned on this blog many a time, I'm a lucky food nerd to have so many ethnic restos close by to the home base. As we were driving down to the local home depot, I pulled over to check this place out since I saw a ton of cars in the parking lot. They basically do diner food latino style - more fun and flavorful than your average local diner.

Our Menu

Arepas con Queso y Huevos *
Flavorful eggs - scrambled with a ton of stuff (tomatoes, onions, etc.). Pretty fun when you eat it with the arepas con queso - arepas were a tad dry though. Plaintains kicked massive ars.

Carne Molida *
Flavorful ground beef that seemed oddly very fluffy - maybe bread mixed into the mixture?

Chorizos ** | Empanadas *
Totally different from the spanish and Mexican chorizos. This had a super porky thing going on, but was lighter and had a pleasant citrus thing going on. The empanadas were pretty fun as well - nothing spectacular but pretty satisfying.

Fresh Guava Juice **
They have a ton of fresh tropical fruits they can blend with either milk or water for you. This was so refreshing and delicious, I would go back just for the shakes.

Overall Restaurant Experience
  • Food – Fun diner food done latino style. They give you a ton of food and it was a funny touch using old school chinatown plates.
  • Service – Service took a little while, but not awfully so. The manager and waiters were extremely friendly and accommodating.
  • Atmosphere – Bright and colorful place with Latin music playing in the background. Much happier environment than your standard diner, which I still dig btw. The place was packed at 1pm on a Sunday. We were lucky and got seated right away, but 10 minutes later - there was a line of 5 couples deep to get in. The place is all hispanic and all eyes were on us when we stepped in. Pretty funny...
  • Price - Dishes are about $8-10 so totally reasonable considering they give you a ton of food.

A very fun place for brunch and definitely will be stopping by again in the future.

Shake Shack is now in DC!

Shake Shack

Washington, DC has finally come around and has some good burger joints appearing. Five Guys is based in Arlington, there’s BGR the Burger joint (my favorite), and now Shake Shack hits the scene at Dupont Circle. The burgers are good there, as are their shakes, but the thing I’m most excited for are the hot dogs. That is one thing that DC is severely lacking in. Though I have not had a dog from the DC location, I’m already proclaiming it the best dog in the DC area based on the ones I had when I was in NYC. This time around, I was in the mood for a burger. I broke my rule of not visiting a place until it was open for 2 weeks and went there on their 1-week anniversary. Of course, there was a long line, even on a late Tuesday evening, but hey, there was an even longer line at the already-opened NYC location. I usually wait 2 weeks so they can work out their bugs. This time was no big deal at all, and everything was working like a well-oiled machine. Based on Porthos’ previous recommendation, I got a “Shake Stack,” which is their cheeseburger with a 'shroom burger topped w/lettuce, tomato & ShackSauce. I also had cheese fries on the side. To review backwards, I dig their fries. Crisp and hot. They add the cheese sauce on top, and that’s a plate full of happiness. The burger was done right with meat that’s better quality than fast food places, sweet bread, but next time I will opt out of the ‘shroom burger. It may be fine on its own, but it kept interfering with my burger-burger. Finally, I separated the 2, and I was in bliss again. Next time I will stick to the classic. Actually, I should say next time I’ll partake in their hot dogs. And shake. I liked their shakes, but I was in SS right after a workout, and my food was already making me feel guilty. $13.64, a bit pricey for a burger & fries, but this isn't BK.

Louis Lunch - Review

Louis' Lunch - Dude Grade C-

Louis' Lunch is the birthplace of the hamburger (est 1900), so I wanted to check it out. We dudes always debate which burger is best, so I figured I had to go check out where it all started. A fun experience although the burger is really a head scratcher - hype for no reason really.

Our Menu

Cheeseburger
The burger is cooked in these old school broilers and served between two slices of toasted white bread (no ketchup, mustard or mayo allowed). What you notice is the grind of the meat is a solid course grind and you get a great crunchy crust with some good char flavor due to the broiler. It's also quite juicy as they cook it to a nice medium rare. Where this is lacking is the flavor since it tastes like they don't season this sucker at all. Meat flavor is totally muted and it's dying for some salt/pepper. A decent/good burger, but it really coulda been a contender.

Foxon Park White Birch **
Another home run for the local East Haven beverage. This was so refreshing and delicious.

Overall Restaurant Experience
  • Food (C-) – An OK burger even without the seasoning, but I feel like you can get a better burger anywhere in NYC. I don't care how good they think the meat is (maybe equal to JG in meat quality), but you have to season!
  • Service (N/A) – You order at the counter and they call your name out when it's ready. Takes about 8-10 minutes for your burger to cook. Guys at the counter are pretty friendly as long as your quick on the decision making/ordering.
  • Atmosphere (A) – Old school defined (opened circa 1895). The whole place is wood and brick with tons of carvings etched into all the booths and walls. Funny things can be found everywhere (specials of da day - hamburger!). We got there at 8:30pm on a Saturday and found the last wall seat. Place seats maybe around 15 and there's a ton of traffic in/out for take out. Definitely love the vibe here.
  • Price (C) - Burgers are 5.25 which is alright.
Closing Comments
We dudes are quite spoiled being in NYC where you can head to any neighborhood and have a pretty awesome burger. The dudes have two types of burger categories - fancy ass burgers using aged primo meat (Prime Meats is the #1 burger for me/Porthos) and the normal burger using cuts like chuck (JG Melon). Louis' falls into the JG Melon category and JG Melon wipes the floor with the place - awesome beef flavor and very juicy. If Louis' sneaks some more salt/pepper into the mix, this would be a pretty awesome burger, but they've been doing things the same way for 100 years, so I don't see change anytime in in their future. Still no clue why everyone was going nuts over the burger - a large group was quite verbal how good it was. Nostalgia and the power of tv (this place is on travel channel and food network a lot) must play a big part of the mystique.

Stowe's Seafood - Review

We were visiting the New Haven area for Louis' Lunch and Pepe's Pizza, but with the weather being nice I wanted some fried seafood. Looking at Yelp, this seemed to be the consensus winner in the area. This place is solid and it's quite awesome eating out in great weather looking at the ocean.

Our Menu

Foxon Park Root Beer **
New Haven has their own local soda (since 1922) and this is pretty damn delicious stuff. Superbly refreshing and this may match my fave - Dr Brown's. A tad too sweet, but still great though.

Fried Clam Belly *
After our visit to Newport, RI, I know fried clam belly is where it's at - chewy flavorless clam strips are for suckers. These here are pretty fun (good clam flavor and not greasy), but now that I've had Flos Clams in Newport all else are lacking. Wish these were juicier like Flo.

Lobster Saute Roll **
Incredibly delicious lobster roll - not the mayo based kind, but sauteed in butter. The lobster and roll are sweet and incredibly yum when drenched in butter.

Soft Shell Crab Sandwich
I love me some soft shelled crab, but this didn't cut it. It was crisp and not greasy, but totally lacked in crab flavor. Worked much better adding malt vinegar and chili sauce, but then you even lose more crab flavor. Wasn't terrible by any means, but not worth ordering.

Overall Restaurant Experience
  • Food (C) – Fun fried seafood.
  • Service (N/A) – You order at the counter and they give you a number. Food takes about 5 minutes to come out, which is pretty damn quick.
  • Atmosphere (A) – A little shack across from the beach in West Haven - can't beat that. Inside looks like it's from a cheezy pirate movie, which I totally dig! There are a bunch of picnic benches outside which may seat around 30 pirates. We got there at 12:30pm on a Saturday and there was no line. Maybe around 20 people seated, but there was always a constant flow in and out for take out orders.
  • Price (C) - Fried stuff are around $10 a boat and $10 for each sandwich.
Closing Comments
After visiting Newport, it's hard to eat fried seafood without dreaming about the awesomeness over there. This place is still a fun place to eat at, so if I'm ever in the area again I would probably go back.

I'm quite lucky having awesome co-workers as I was constantly being taken out for lunch my last 3 weeks there. I chose Blaue Gans since I've heard some great things about Kurt Gutenbrunner's cooking and Schnitzel sounded hella fun. Good times and some tasty food they're serving up here.

Our Menu

Red Cabbage Salad, Apples, Walnuts And Lingonberries **
Simple, but so up my strike zone. Great crunch and loved the sweet sour thing going on with the apples and lingonberries.

Wiener Schnitzel with potato-cucumber salad and lingonberries *
Delicious schnitzel with a great light crunchy crust. Really delicious combo with the lingonberries and potato-cucumber salad. The main complaint was the schnitzel was slightly dry - not terribly so, but noticeable after trying the Prime Meats schnitzel.

Apple Strudel with tahitian vanilla ice cream *
A light dessert and fun way to end the meal.

Overall Restaurant Experience
  • Food (B-) – Solid Austrian food and perfect for lunch.
  • Service (B) – Food came out relatively quick and the server was good with recommending the dishes and brews.
  • Atmosphere (A) – Place had tall ceilings and was quite large with tons of light. It did have this eurotrash/divebar type of feel which is a-OK in my book. We got there at 12:30 and were seated immediately. It seems like it would fit 50-60 people, but it was pretty empty for lunch. The only people there were either tourists or suits.
  • Price (A) - $23 for 3 courses - solid deal for some fun food

A pretty fun place and definitely should be in any lunchtime rotation in tribeca.

Prime Meats - Revisit

My last day at work and I knew I had to do Prime Meats with my buddy since he is quite the connoisseur of burgers. We went for burgers, but we ended up doing a trifecta instead. I've said it before on the blog, but I need to reiterate this is a 100% must visit for any food nerd out there.

Our Menu
Pork Schnitzel **
pork loin, braded and fried served with home-made potato salad
I literally just had schnitzel at Blaue Gans which I thought was great, but this thing blows it out of the water. A nice light crispy batter with pork that is insanely tender and flavorful. Add the bright and refreshing potato salad and you have a dynamo combo.

House Cured Pastrami (special) ***
I don't get this but this beats Katz's deli. The pastrami is so flavorful, not chemically so, but natural tasting. Plus, it has a ton of fat and marbling...in a good way. This is food that will make your knees weak.

The Prime Meats Burger ***
1/2 lb. creekstone certified black angus, house-made sesame roll & fermented dill pickle, lettuce, tomato, onion & hand-cut french fries
Best burger ever - tastes like a phenomenal steak, eats like a burger. Enjoy the food porn shot.

Prime Meats Pilsner **
A delicious beer for a workday lunch.

アスパラベーコン

Industry buddy of mine invited me over his house for a home cooked meal.
It's a great change of pace when you spend most of your day out with sales reps and constantly feeding your face with restaurant food. Not that it's a terrible thing to eat out all the time, but a nice home cooked meal is definitely nice once in a while.

This particular dish is called Asparagus Bacon. A very popular dish in the Yakitori repertoire.
Pretty self explanatory. Great combo and even better when cooked over charcoals.
