Jersey Subs

Got a sub yesterday for lunch and I can't say enough how much I love them. For those, who don't know what a sub is, it's a colloquial New Jersey term for sandwich. Now, there are different styles of sandwiches even in Jersey (Hoboken's fresh mozzarella sandwiches will be discussed in a later post), but I'll focus on the Central Jersey sub.

What makes a great Jersey sub, is the soft fresh bread, drenched in oil and vinegar, lots of fresh shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, and heaping mounds of meat - usually Italian because, hey there's a reason why the Sopranos are in NJ. The combination of textures (soft bread, crunchy lettuce and onions) and flavors (saltiness of the meats and sourness of the vinegar) are heavenly.

My personal fave is a turkey and swiss sub with a little mayo, lots of oil and vinegar, crunchy bacon, lots of crunchy lettuce and onions, juicy sliced tomatoes, and loads of turkey...give it a try the next time you stop by the N W Jers.

Da Best!!!
There's a place in Matawan, NJ...
"DA Subs"

They make the quintessential NJ Sub.

The #9 is a Roast Beef/Turkey Sub with all the fixins with crispy bacon, mayo, oil and vinegar and dashes of oregano.

Man, is this good.

Interesting. Looks pretty much identical to subs you find in & around Chicago. Same thing w/the Italian meats. And sadly, that;s not available around DC. There are some places that are known out in DC, but they are a faaaar cry to subs in ChiTown (and NJ).

Okay, now I'm hungry.
