Bluefin - Extinction?
Looks like the sushi craze is spreading to China. Big problem according to this article from AFP. I guess when the most populous country in the world starts consuming sushi, there is a big concern on the extinction of bluefin tuna. The problem still lies with Japan as they consume 85% of the tuna in the world. Curious to see if consumption of salmon sushi would affect the salmon population as well...usually when I think of sushi in the US it's always tuna or salmon...

Japan mainly at fault. But you can not underestimate good 'ol China.
As the Chinese Aristocracy develops a taste for Blue Fin Tuna, their numbers and purchasing power will surely wipe out the supply with a blink of the eye.
There are fish farmers out there already trying to raise sustainable tuna, but unlike salmon, these fish need to be in the deep blue seas to grow to full maturity before it starts tasting like the "toro" we know it as. 50x25 meter netted cages in the ocean can hardly be considered ample room for 100s of fish to wonder freely.
These Tuna that are grown in fattening pens really don't produce the same kind of marbling you find in the wild.
But the point is, consumption is far ahead of supply, and therefore extinction is upon us.
I guess eat up and enjoy now, since our children will probably never be able to taste a nice piece of o-toro.
